National Mutt Day

Going Over The Holiday That Promotes And Appreciates Mixed Breed Dogs, A.K.A. Mutts

July 31st is widely known and celebrated for being National Mutt Day! While everyday is a good day to celebrate mixed breed dogs, they are officially celebrated twice a year on December 2nd and July 31st. The term “mutt” is used to refer to mixed-breed dogs. Here at Lucky Dogs and Cool Cats pet sitting, we love and celebrate all dogs regardless of breed. This article will discuss National Mutt Day, why it’s important, and how you can get involved.

How It Started

Every holiday, big or small, has to start somewhere. In 2005, National Mutt Day was founded by Colleen Paige, a celebrity pet & family lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate. Colleen Paige is a die-hard pet lover that aims to help as many pets as she can across the world. She is responsible for creating many pet themed awareness-based holidays such as National Puppy Day and National Pet Day.

The Message Of The Holiday

The purpose of National Mutt Day is to raise awareness about how amazing mixed-breed dogs are and promote them being adopted at animal shelters across the country. Sadly, many people are quick to judge a book by its cover and are more likely to adopt a purebred looking dog compared to a mixed-breed. The goal of this holiday is to remind people that mutts are just as beautiful and loving as any other breed of dog.

Shelter Dog Statistics

Statistics from the A.S.P.C.A. (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) shows that 3.1 million dogs enter animal shelters across the U.S. every year. What’s even more alarming is that 390,000 of those shelter dogs are euthanized every year. This is due to a lack of space, resources, and volunteers at U.S. animal shelters. While euthanization is sometimes unavoidable, these drastically high statistics are avoidable.

National Mutt Day helps to remind us about the terrible plight that shelter dogs go through and how the odds are stacked against them. All dogs, including mutts, deserve a good home. The goal of this holiday is help find them one.

How You Can Observe National Mutt Day

When it comes to participating in National Mutt Day, one of the best things you can do is adopt a mixed-breed dog. However, not everyone has the means or circumstances to adopt. Besides adoption, you can also observe National Mutt Day by donating to your local animal shelter. Most animal shelters are always in need of blankets, towels, dog or cat food, and other pet supplies. In many cases, they will also take monetary donations too.

Aside from adoption or donations, you can also get involved with National Mutt Day by volunteering at your local animal shelter. Volunteer work at animal shelters is a very rewarding experience. It gives you the opportunity to help your local animal shelter and directly interact with dogs in need. Even just a few hours a week can make all the difference in a shelter dog’s life.

Let The People Know!

To help us celebrate National Mutt Day, we encourage you to tell everyone you know about this wonderful holiday. Be sure to tell your family & friends about National Mutt Day and promote it on social media. By spreading the word about National Mutt Day, you are helping mutts everywhere. Many people still don’t know about this incredible holiday, but it only takes one post to make a difference.
